Porch in Summer

15 X 14 inches
Charcoal, Pastel, & Ink on Paper

This drawing was begun on the spot and completed in my studio.  The strong red coloring of the vase lent itself to the foreground, while the softer textures of the hats and baskets added interest to the background.

Geese Resting

18 X 22 1/2 inches
Charcoal on Tinted Paper

During the spring and summer of 2009, I did many quick studies of the various geese at a local park.  I used those sketches, along with photographs, to do this piece.  The unique animals featured in it are most similar to Chinese geese, which are descended from the wild swan goose.  It was this very quality - the graceful, swan-like curve of the geese's necks - that drew me to them as a subject in the first place.

The Meeting

14 X 16 inches
Charcoal

This drawing was inspired by a photograph of Joan Root, wildlife activist and filmaker, in the August 2006 issue of Vanity Fair.  I wanted to portray a sort of magical meeting of two worlds: the natural world and the manmade world.  Some of the animals are standing in the courtyard, which is manmade, and the woman has one foot in and one foot out.  Reaching out to touch or feed the hippo, she is also connecting with the natural world, as it connects back to her.

On a Pedestal

18 X 23 inches
Charcoal

To begin this piece, I took my drawing board to a local antique shop, where I had spotted this stone object.  I finished it in my studio, using my imagination and other sources to complete it.  I was attracted to the soft, curved lines and shapely form of the object.

King Lion

22 X 19 inches
Charcoal and Pastel on Paper

As you may already know, in the Bible God is referred to as "the Lion of Judah." That title and imagery speaks to me, and this is my first attempt to convey what that means to me.  It was inspired by a photograph in a magazine and my own ideas about complementary colors.
